Purpose

NERVE (Neurosurgery Education and Research Virtual Experience Group) is a national virtual interest group designed to help supplement medical school, by providing a multi-institutional forum for shared objective mentorship. We have a particular focus on disadvantaged students, with preference given to students interested in neurosurgery/neurology/neuroscience/psychiatry, those who do not have a home program and/or a national organization chapter (AANS, AAN, etc.) in their specialty of interest at their home institution, those underrepresented in medicine/their specialty of choice, first generation medical students, and those currently enrolled in their first through third year of medical school or in research fellowship years. Our goal is to focus on five competency domains: (1) Research Skills and Scholarly Activity, (2) Clinical Knowledge, (3) Professional Development, (4) Technological Literacy and Resource Management, and (5) Technical Skills. To this end, in addition to twice-monthly sessions covering research skills, clinical knowledge, and professional skills, NERVE students participate on one or more of Brain and Spine Group's research teams.
